Music Theory
Studying music theory is a fantastic way to improve on your instrument. It helps develop a deeper understanding of your repertoire, even at the early levels. It also helps accelerate your musical literacy and sets you up for success as you advance on your instrument.
All theory classes follow the RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) Certificate Program curriculum. Private Lessons are available for students preparing for other theory examinations such as ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) and AP Music Theory.

REQUIRED MATERIALS -
Reliable internet connection
Tablet, laptop or desktop computer. A phone will not work as music will be shared on screen.
Books - These are included with tuition and will be mailed after registration is complete.
ZOOM -
All classes will be done through Zoom. You don’t need a special subscription for this. We will send you a link to click on, follow the instructions and you will be connected.
REGISTRATION DEADLINE -
We highly recommend signing up at least 7 days before the first day of class so that you can receive your materials in time.

AGES 7-9
This beginning course is designed for students ages 7-9 who are just starting out on their instrument, or who have never studied formal music theory. Key concepts will include note reading in treble and bass clef, major and minor scales up to 2 sharps and flats, triads, whole steps/half steps and other intervals, music history and basic rhythm and meter. Students who complete this course can progress to Theory 2.
AGES 10-13
This fast paced beginning course is designed for older students (ages 10-13) who are just starting out on their instrument, or who have never studied formal music theory. Key concepts include reading in treble and bass clef, major and minor scales up to 4 sharps and flats, diatonic triads, intervals, music history and basic rhythm and meter. Students who complete this course can progress directly to Theory 6. Exam equivalent: RCM Theory 5.
Music Theory Faculty
Carrie Campbell
Carrie Campbell studied Music Education and Music Therapy at the University of Georgia where she received her Bachelor of Music, and later at Yale University where she received her Masters in Horn Performance, studying with Paul Ingraham. For many years Carrie has been both a teacher and advocate of community arts education through her work at the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA). She taught private and group classes in horn, music theory, ear training, and music history, as well as coordinated many of the school’s programs. In July 2014 Carrie was named Music School Director at CSMA where she oversaw all aspects of the school including private lessons, music classes, Music4Schools, Corporate Arts Program, and CSMA’s Tateuchi Hall. Combined these programs serve over 15,000 students per year.
In addition to her work in community arts programs, Carrie taught musicianship at the San Francisco Conservatory Pre-College and serves as a member of the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) College of Examiners. She also serves as an RCM US Representative, guiding teachers and schools in the RCM curriculum as well as giving presentations throughout the US.
As a horn player, Carrie has played with many of the Bay Area’s regional orchestras and theaters; including Oakland Symphony, Monterey Symphony, West Bay Opera, and Broadway by the Bay.
