Learning with Jason

With students spanning all ages and passions, Jason’s primary goal is to help his students visualize and work toward success, and have fun while doing so! As an instructor, Jason is patient and approachable, taking the time to understand his students’ interests and obstacles in order to craft a personalized curriculum that will keep them engaged and making progress. His playful and spontaneous approach allows him to connect with students, keeping them playing music they enjoy and helping them overcome any anxieties they might have.

Whether you’re beginning your musical journey as a young person, finding your passion for music in your later years, or developing your skills and working towards a specific goal, learning with Jason will help you stay focused, deepen your musicality, and become the musician you want to be.

Teaching Specialties

Whether you want to complete a classical guitar certification program, learn to navigate jazz band charts, get into all-state, win a songwriting competition, release an EP with your band, or just be comfortable playing at a jam with friends, you’ve come to the right place.

With his ability to teach to practically any musical style or technique, Jason helps his students achieve a wide variety of goals while developing strong fundamentals. All of Jason’s students learn how to read various types of notation, play with proper technique, get the most out of their practice time, and understand and apply the theory underlying their playing. 

Some of Jason’s specialities include:

  • Teaching students to transcribe and play their favorite songs

  • Preparing students for performances in the face of anxiety

  • Helping students write or arrange their own music

  • Teaching advanced rock, jazz, classical and progressive techniques

  • Preparing students for auditions and certifications including ABRSM and Certificate of Merit

Biography

Jason Countryman is a professional musician and composer who has been teaching since 2002, with a focus on guitar, ukulele, music theory, performance, and songwriting. His background as a multi-instrumentalist provides a foundation for his approach to musicality, drawing influence from and being able to teach to a variety of styles and aspects of musicianship. Building community is a passion for Jason, and he hosts recitals and jams and connects students with local resources. 

Jason holds a B.A. in Music Composition and Classical Guitar from Cal State University, East Bay, but has extensive experience across a variety of music genres, playing in jazz bands, folk groups, theater pits, experimental electronica collaborations, and as a classical/fingerstyle soloist.
